Welcome to the second “fun” post for Veronica’s and my giveaway extravaganza! Today we’re both answering some survey questions, created by Veronica. My answers will be in navy blue, and her responses will be in green. We’re starting with some easy questions, but it’ll get ugly really quickly. She’s asking some questions that I KNOW we have different opinions on!
Favorite Sci-Fi book/series?
Singular book – Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card. Series – oh God I hate you already Veronica. HOW CAN I PICK. There’s Divergent, The Hunger Games, Control, The Lunar Chronicles, Steelheart… I refuse to pick. I can’t!
BAHAHAHA. You shall be punished for not following the rules.
Favorite Sci-Fi trope?
The “orphan band of kids with unique powers all come together and create a makeshift family” trope. I don’t care how cliche it is – I love seeing the cast outs find new families and hope and laughter!
DUDE READ THE DARKET MINDS ALREADY. ITS THAT FREAKING TROPE
ALL RIGHT I’LL PUT IT AFTER GAME OF THRONES
If you could live in a science fiction world that exists in one of the books you’ve read, which one would it be?
DON’T MAKE ME PICK. If I could somehow escape the whole tyrannic government dystopia thing, then I’d go for the Avalon world, the Control world, or the Ender’s Game world. Sign me up for spaceships and the stars!
I WILL MAKE YOU PICK.
Is there a trope you hate to see in sci-fi?
It’s not really a trope I guess, but I hate it when the focus is ONLY on the romance. I read sci-fi to explore new worlds and get fantastic world-building – not to read about someone dramatically smooching. I’d pick a contemporary if I wanted pure romance. Not to say that I don’t like romance in sci-fi, but it should be a subplot, not the main plot.
Hey Hey Hey contemporary is not always romance. *evil eyes*
Who is your favorite male character in the YA dystopian genre? Why?
Peeta Mellark from the Hunger Games for sure. He just so good. Just like Haymitch said: “you could live a hundred lifetimes and not deserve that boy.” He’s compassionate, selfless, and optimistic despite the horrid world. I love Finnick Odair as well – because he was this douchey peacock character who turned into a complex character very similar to Peeta.
HAHAHA. I am so not surprised with your answer. I would totally pick Finnick.
Who is your favorite female character in the YA dystopian genre? Why?
June Iparis from the Legend trilogy. She never lets her relationship with Day cloud her from seeing what she needs to do in a situation, but she still loves him fiercely. And she tackles everything with cool focus, intelligence, and I bet she looked freaking fantastic while she did it all.
Danget, I need to get to reading Legend. I’m behind!
And YOU’RE the one that got me into the series in the first place!!!
If you were told to pick between the following four dystopian worlds to live in, which one would you choose: Divergent, The Hunger Games, The Testing, or Under the Never Sky? Why?
Probably Divergent or The Hunger Games. I wouldn’t love being in a dystopia, but I think I’d have the most flexibility to try and make things different in those two worlds.
AGAIN WITH THE NOT FOLLOWING RULES.
Out of all the guys you ship yourself with, which is THE fictional boyfriend?
Does he have to be sci-fi? If I can add Contemporary, I’d totally go with Levi from Fangirl or Cricket from Lola and the Boy Next Door. But sticking to our theme, it would have to be Peeta (of course), Sturmhond (Siege and Storm), or Raffe (Angelfall).
Okay, I’ll let you bend the rules and it doesn’t have to be sci-fi, it was any of the genres that are in the giveaway. DUH. lol
Do you prefer fantasy mixed with another genre, or high fantasy? Why?
It’s not that I dislike mixed fantasy, but my heart truly lies with high fantasy. There’s nothing that can compare to the Grisha Trilogy or the Throne of Glass series ❤
BOOOOO. Ummmm Throne of Glass is not considered High Fantasy my lady. HA! Grisha totally is though. I need to finish the second book. lol
HOW is it not high fantasy??? There’s a freaking MAP in the cover flap – do you find that in any normal fantasy?? Map in flap is the #1 hint of high fantasy. Plus, there is NO mention of the “real world” at all – it’s all set on a different continent with a different culture and everything.
Favorite fantasy novel so far in 2014?
I’m going to assume this is “favorite fantasy read” in 2014, and I’m going to say Crown of Midnight by Sarah J. Maas for sure! If it’s “published in 2014”, then my answer is… well…. I’ve actually not read any fantasies published this year. Going have to remedy that soon!
Yes, Fantasy read. Jeez.
SPECIFIC IS IMPORTANT.
Angels or Demons?
Oh dear lord why do you ask me these impossible questions. It depends on what kind of demon we’re talking about. If it’s like Meda from Cracked, and she’s fighting against her nature but still being awesome, then probably demons if they’re compared to the fluffy angels. But avenging angels like in Angelfall… I’m sorry but that’s like my book fetish.
CAUSE I’M COOL LIKE THAT.
Vampires or werewolves?
Again, it depends on the type of vampires and werewolves. Anything remotely related to Twilight is a big fat NO from me. But Veronica introduced me to the Vampire Academy vampires, and those are a bit better. I kind of love the Strigoi the most though (I do tend to love evil tortured species). To be really honest I just avoid vampires and werewolves entirely until Veronica pesters me for months until I give in.
HEY HEY HEY. Vampires a cool. Get with the program Kayla.
Favorite paranormal novel?
I’m going off the idea that paranormal is vampires/werewolves/mixed breeds/ghosts. Maybe I just need to expand my idea of paranormal, but according to that definition I’ve only read two in the last several years, and that would be Vampire Academy and The Raven Boys. And I love those equally!
Paranormal is all that. Hehe. Really anything that has to do with supernatural in today’s world. Basically. YAY VA!
Which paranormal world would you live in if you had to pick one? Why?
Probably the VA world, if I could be a dhampir. If I could be best friends with Gansy, then I’d go for The Raven Boys. All conditional of course!
OMG ME TOO. Big surprise right? LOL and of course I’m talking about VA. HEHE
If you were more than human, what would you choose to be? (Any being from a fantasy, sci-fi, or paranormal novel)
Well my standard answer is elf – Eldar to be specific. (And this is where I reveal my huge Tolkien geekdom). I think being a sorceress like in the Grisha world would be fantastic. Anything that would give me wings would be wicked too – angel, harpy, shapeshifting bird-woman – just let me fly!
OHHHHHH I really wasn’t expecting that. The elf thing. Now the flying thing. I was like okay, I got her there. I almost had to assess our friendship right there. lol
The elf thing is my deep dark wish 😉 One day I’ll sail to the Undying Lands and meet Legolas and Gimli and Galadriel.
What faction would you choose if you were a part of the Divergent world? Why?
I’m actually going to surprise Veronica with this answer – I’d choose Dauntless. I used to say Erudite without a doubt (and if I could somehow have dual factions and be Erudite/Dauntless that would be the best option), but after I read Divergent for the second time and read the manifestos of all five factions, my mind was changed for sure. My favorite quote from the Dauntless manifesto: “We believe in shouting for those who can only whisper.” If I look at all my favorite quotes from other books, they’re all about challenging yourself and daring to be more. So I guess not the crazy let’s throw ourselves off buildings type of Dauntless, but the courageous, I will defend my loved ones till I die, challenge myself despite my fears type of Dauntless.
Although according to one test I’m Candor, and another test says I’m Abnegation and Amity equally. So really I guess I’ll never know for sure!
You surprised me a little, but not too much cause honey you a rebel. Enough said. lol but you know why you’re all of those… CAUSE YOU’RE DIVERGENT. DAAUNTLEEEEEEESSSSSS!!!!
Now Divergent I could handle. I think I’m okay with that!
So lines have been drawn… although at least we didn’t get into a shipping war this time! Chaol + Celaena forever!!!
