Weekly Recap 38 (August 3) – MOAR BOOKS (And a giveaway winner!)

Well hello Sunday my old friend. I hope today sees you all well! I had another awesome week; still busy at work, but really what’s new about that? I’m in the prep stages for the new school year; I’ve got four classes to create syllabuses for and prepare all my lesson plans, so that’s keeping me very busy. At least it’s fun, and I get to binge watch new TV shows while I plan!

Stacking the Shelves

photo.PNGOooo aren’t they just so pretty?! I think I have an issue. But as I always tell my mom: at least it’s not crack. I had an unexpected tutoring job, so with the little bit of cash I earned from that I bought Volumes 1 and 2 of Attack on Titan (SO EXCITED) and Silver Shadows. What’s actually kind of hilarious is that I still haven’t finished the Vampire Academy series, but at least now I can binge all the Bloodlines books whenever I’m ready. I also preordered The Young World, since BN had it for 50% off and after I read the little sampler from the POP Culture event I knew I wanted to read the rest. While I was perusing the BN shelves on Thursday, I found this tiny little book called One + One = Blue. It’s about synesthesia. I just knew I had to get it, and ended up reading it that night! While it focused less on synesthesia than I had hoped, it was still a good book.

The other two books were a total surprise: my package from the Summer Box Swap came in, from my secret partner Kristen @ The Book Monsters!  I was just over the moon when I saw Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children – I’ve been wanting to read that book ever since I got into blogging more than a year ago! I also received All These Things I’ve Done (can’t get that Killers song out of my head every time I read the title); I’ve read one Zevin book before, so I’m excited to see if I like her other books.

A wee bit of bad news (in the bookish sense)… I had originally bought Let’s Get Lost instead of Silver Shadows, but ended up DNFing it. I only made it through the first story (Hudson’s), at about 75 pages, and then went back to BN to exchange the books. I’ll put up a post later on in the month explaining all my reasons why, but suffice it to say that I was SO disappointed, especially since I’d been beyond excited for that release. It was my most anticipated from the summer, and to see it bomb like that was kind of depressing!

In other news…

Need I say more?

It’s now officially ONE MONTH of going Paleo! I’ve lost a total of 9.2 pounds (Saturday weigh-in), and I’m still totally in awe of everything that’s been happening. The weight is a great side effect, but the best part is how I’m feeling: more energetic, and no more fogginess every day. Not to mention the fact that my acne is clearing up; I’ve never passed that puberty-acne stage, apparently, but this is a nice change to have clear skin. Another fantastic moment: my Harry Potter tshirt that used to be TIGHT (at a size L, or XL – can’t remember), is now way loose! It fits great in the shoulders (since I inherited my dad’s broadness), but billows out around my tummy. Excuse me while I dance for seven hours in happiness ^_^

I’m also seriously on another book ban. For the month of August. I can do this. Yes? Yes. The only allowance is Isla and the Happily Ever After, and possibly volume 3 of Attack on Titan – but only if BN sends out more coupons. The rest of my budget will first and foremost go to self-hosting! I’m actually really hoping that whole process will happen this week – I might be writing my next update as the brand new TTL!

And in more good news, my blogoversary giveaway ended Thursday night! I swear, that was the most stress-filled moment ever when I clicked the “randomize a winner” button. WHO WAS GOING TO BE THE ONE?? I was grinning so much when I saw the name: Marga @ Deadly Darlings! I haven’t known her long, but in the last few weeks I’ve had a great time getting to know her and chatting over books! And let me tell you – she has some fabulous taste in books. I highly approve of her choices in spending the giveaway money 😉 Thank you to everyone who participated in the giveaway and left comments on my blog; I’ve never felt so loved in my life!

Weekly Recap 37 (July 27) – In Which I Have Zero Self Control

Well hello Sunday my old friend. I can’t believe another week has passed again! Nothing of note to report really. Work kept me busy and other than that I spent a lot of time on my couch reading and watching TV.

I… I have zero apologies to give. Screw book bans and just let me work extra shifts! Because I need ALL THE BOOKS *grabby hands* I feel okay about getting so many books this month because 1) half were from birthday money and 2) I’m only getting Isla and the Happily Ever After in August *I think*. So yeah – MOAR BOOKS.

Meg and Lesley have taken me down a very dark path (no regrets), and I snatched up a copy of the spin-off manga detailing Levi’s origins. I’m now impatiently waiting for volume 2 until it’s released in November. And while I was grocery shopping (grocery shopping – how the hell do I end up with books when I’m buying FOOD) I found a super cheap copy of The Giver and just had to get it – $5! The size is nice, and the pages are soft, and since my copy mysteriously vanished, I had to get another one so I can read it again before the movie is released. Oh and then there’s Dany – my glorious dragony Khaleesi to guard all my books. She sits on top of my TBR pile to remind me to be as fearless and her and tackle that mountain.

In other news…

The Paleo diet is still going very well! I’m at a total of 7.4 pounds lost, and I can see a noticeable change in my body shape. My work clothes actually fit like they should! Except one pair of scrubs are starting to get too big, so there’s that. I guess it’s a good problem to have, yeah? And I just found that my sister has all my pairs of jeans that are a size too small for me, but I’m hoping I can steal them back in the next month or so 😉

I’m in the middle of Heir of Fire – OH MY GOD EVERYONE HOLY SHENANIGANS I MAY CRY. I can already tell you: my review will be composed of keyboard smashing, gifs, polyamorous shipping, and maybe a coherent sentence or two sprinkled in between. It’s just… ❤ I really wish I had a physical copy, but the eARC will do for now until I can reread it in hardback when September rolls around. I’ve pinpointed my problem with ebooks: I don’t have a mental map of what’s happening in the book. Like when I’m holding pages, I can remember things a lot better because I remember how thick each side was in my hand when something happened. Like if I close my eyes I can see all the pages I’ve already read, and the blank pages in front of me. With an ebook, I can see that one page only, and the rest is invisible. /crazysaucerant

I’d love some good thoughts and prayers sent my way! I’ve been having a lot of pain and dryness from my contacts in the last few days, and I had to wear my glasses yesterday (I normally only wear them like never – emergency only). My sister has a similar problem that’s been diagnosed as wonky cells covering her cornea like scales – I’m really hoping I’m not developing the same thing. We’ll see how the next few days go! I’m hoping it’s just tiredness to blame.

Weekly Recap 36 (July 20) – Barnes and Noble is Awesome

Well hello Sunday my old friend. I can’t believe another week has passed again! This week was really strange, with the whole not working for five days then coming back to work four very busy days. But, now I’m off again until Wednesday. This whole summer schedule is really throwing me off – no week is the same anymore! Just five more weeks until school – hooray! I’m sure my students are already crying, but I’m really excited to go back. I’ve started writing down lesson plans and I’ve got some great stuff planned, especially in my American Lit class.

Stacking the Shelves

Note to self: when you go on a month-long book buying ban, beware the monster that’s unleashed when said ban is lifted. I SWEAR I DIDN’T MEAN TO DO THIS BUT BARNES AND NOBLE SENT OUT MORE COUPONS AND I STOLE MY MOM’S TOO SO I JUST HAD TO STOP BY.

photo 1Fangirl I had actually ordered last Sunday, because who can say no to the limited edition of their favorite book? It’s even prettier in person with the Simon/Baz foiling and the bookmark and the printing on the pages and the emergency dance party print on the inside cover and ooohhhhh…

And then since I’m a horrible person and capitalize frequently on my local BN’s habit of putting books out several days early, I picked up both OCD Love Story by Corey Ann Haydu and Dissonance by Erica O’Rourke, both of which technically aren’t out till Tuesday.

Kelley @ Oh, the Books hasn’t let me forget about Dissonance for one day since she read it, and says that I’m going to see oodles of colors when I read this one. So keep an eye out in the next few weeks – I’m sure I’ll end up Saturating it sometime soon 😉

Have I mentioned that Barnes and Noble is awesome sauce? Because they are. I forgot that the pop-culture event was going on this weekend, and when I walked in one of my favorite booksellers (AL! He reminds me of a really sweet version of my grandpa) shuffled me over to this table (is it sad that I know my booksellers and they know me? They don’t even need to ask if I have a membership anymore, it’s just “what’s your phone number?”) and basically ushered me into the gates of heaven.

photo 2I picked up a bunch of little pamphlets that have 2-5 chapters from the beginning of books! Dorothy Must Die, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, The Young Elites (!!!), The Young World, Mistborn and on the flip side Words of Radiance, and Attack on Titan. Because now that I’ve watched the whole show I want to start reading it too (THANKS A LOT MEG I JUST SOLD MY SOUL TO AOT). I also got my school supplies in the mail for my British Lit class – Beowulf, Pride and Prejudice, and The Lord of the Rings. Time to start laying out all the details for lessons! Oh yeah, and that’s Princess. She decided that my pile of books was her new bed.

In other news…

I didn’t get a lot of reading done this week, mostly because Meg and Lesley hooked me on Attack on Titan. I watched the whole first season, and since I see it on tumblr all the time I also watched season one of Free! Iwatobi Swim Club. And now because Lesley recommended it, I think I’m starting Madoka Magica. I have no idea what it’s about, but she says it’s good, and it’s on Netflix I think. I have this feeling that I’m sinking into a black hole that has no bottom O+O

I cried SO HARD

It’s now two weeks that I’ve been eating Paleo, and I’ve now lost 6.2 pounds. Which is just like… I can’t even comprehend it. I’ve steadily gained weight over the last five years, unable to lose any no matter what I did. And now all of sudden it’s like it’s just flying off. Every time I weigh myself it’s like – wait – let me do that again – that can’t be right! But it is, and I’m just so excited because my scrubs are starting to slip off my butt and while it’s really not attractive it’s really encouraging every time I have to hike them up my waist again.

Except Lottie is a bit more gifted in the chest area than me – but basically this

Now that I’ve reached a year now on TTL (there’s still time to enter my giveaway! Check out the sidebar for my banner and link), I want to challenge myself and participate even more in the community. So to start it off, I’m contacting a few authors to see if they’d be interested in doing an interview – hopefully I’ll have some positive answers! I’ve also got big (top secret!) plans for the next few months – I’m so excited to see how it all works out and that you guys enjoy it!

Weekly Recap 35 (July 13) – The Birthday Book Haul (Part TWO!)

Well hello Sunday my old friend. I can’t believe another week has passed again! Yet another busy week at work, but at least it makes the time pass quickly! But I get Friday through Tuesday off, so I spent all Friday being a general waste of society and marathoning Netflix shows. But hey – I’ve got a bunch of posts scheduled for next week and I read some really great books, so really what is the downside here?

Stacking the Shelves

And the book ban breaking continues! Some of the books I preordered, or ones that didn’t show up till this week, finally came in, and I think I may be excited more than last week??

Aren’t they pretty??? After I fell in love with Nina LaCour’s writing in Everything Leads to You, I had to get her other two books, Hold Still and The Disenchantments. And after Jo’s rave review, I had to get There Will Come a Time by Carrie Arcos. BRING ON THE FEELS. And to satiate the sci-fi/fantasy/paranormal side of me, I preordered three books that were released on the 8th: Four (Veronica Roth), Midnight Thief (Livia Blackburne), and Where Silence Gathers (Kelsey Sutton). I NEED MORE TIME IN MY WEEK TO READ ALL THESE BOOKS. IT’S A SERIOUS PROBLEM.

In other news…

  • It’s still blazing hot in California. Though it was nice (nice meaning like 90F with a breeze) on Friday – at like 8 in the morning. I didn’t go outside after that. I think I need to start carrying around a cup of ice with me wherever I go.
  • Last Sunday, in my never-ending attempts to manage the thyroid issue my doctor won’t quite call hypothyroidism because it’s “on the border”, I’ve started the Paleo diet. Lots of veggies and fruit over here! I had already gone gluten-free, so it wasn’t horribly painful, but OH MY GOD I MISS DAIRY. SPECIFICALLY MILK. But other than that, I actually don’t miss sweets all that much. Sometimes I want a chocolate chip or two, but it’s easy to ignore that. And I have a lot more energy, and I’m sleeping better. So – week one is a success! Oh, and I lost four pounds since I went gluten free, so now adding the Paleo thing I’m pretty sure I’ll finally start seeing some progress.
